Is Thailand Still Cheap in 2026? What $1,000 vs $5,000 Buys

Thailand is cheap. You have heard that a thousand times. In 2026, it is half true. And the wrong half will cost you.

So let me show you what $1,000 buys you in Thailand right now. Then what $5,000 buys you. And the one thing that is actually different between those two trips. It is not what you think.

What changed: three numbers

  • The Baht. In January 2025, one dollar bought you about 34 Baht. By September of that year, under 32. That is a 7 percent jump in nine months. On a $1,000 budget, that is roughly 2,500 Baht that simply disappeared before you even landed.
  • Fewer visitors. The tourism board itself cut its forecast for this year by 18 percent. They now expect 30 to 34 million visitors. And in the first seven months of 2026, arrivals were down about 3 percent.
  • Pattaya. The head of the local tourism association said it straight: the strong Baht makes Thailand a more expensive destination. Four and five star hotels there dropped their rates to compete with three star hotels.

So is Thailand expensive now?

Honest answer: no. But it is not the place from the old videos either. Some things are still dirt cheap. Some things got expensive. And if you do not know which is which, you will spend $5,000 and get the $1,000 trip.

Let's break it down. Four categories: where you sleep, what you eat, going out, and company.

1. Where you sleep

The cheapest room I ever stayed in was about $6 a night. It was almost opposite Bangla Road in Phuket. It was fine at the time. I would not do it again.

I have also paid over $100 a night. And here is what I learned. Both ends are not worth it.

  • Under $20, you pay with something else. Noise. Location. A bed that feels like a table.
  • Over $100, maybe $150, the extra value is tiny. You get a bigger lobby and a nicer towel.
  • The sweet spot is $20 to $50 a night. And that is the daily rate. Book a week, or a month, and it goes down.

One thing surprised me. I stayed in a $60 hotel in the Sala Daeng area in Bangkok, and the noise from the other rooms was far louder than in a $10 a night condo where I stayed for months. Price does not buy you quiet. Knowing the place does.

For comparison, here is my own number. Right now I pay about 12,000 Baht a month for a quiet one room apartment, two stops from Asok. Train, supermarket, 7-Eleven, all close by. That is a monthly contract, not a tourist rate, but it shows you where the floor is. More numbers are in my 2026 costs of living.

So, the $1,000 guy and the $5,000 guy. The room is where you see a real difference. One sleeps in a basic room a few train stops out. The other is in a nice hotel with a pool and a gym, five minutes from everything. Both are fine. Neither needs the $150 room.

2. Food

This is the part that is still true. Food in Thailand is cheap, and the ceiling is low.

Go to any food court in a mall. Most meals are 50 to 70 Baht. You can eat well for under 200 Baht a day.

I spend about 250 Baht a day on food. Most of my meals come from 7-Eleven. Chicken and rice, protein shakes, bananas. I am tracking calories, and at a food court I cannot do that.

You will eat out more than me. That is fine. $10 to $20 a day gets you all the good stuff. A $50 a day food budget? I honestly would not know how to spend that much.

So here, $1,000 and $5,000 buy you the same thing. Nobody goes home saying the food was too expensive.

3. Going out

Now it gets interesting. Because this is where the money goes, and where most guys waste it.

Here is my typical night out, when I am not going to a gogo bar. Two drinks, about 200 Baht. A taxi home after midnight, when the trains have stopped, about 150 Baht. That is $10 for the night.

How? Because I do not go from sober to drunk inside a venue. That is the expensive way. If you start drinking at the bar and stop when you can barely stand, you paid a premium on every single glass.

The cheaper way gives you the same night. A couple of drinks from 7-Eleven or at a simple beer bar. Walk around. Get in the mood. Then go to the more exciting places, where you buy one or two drinks, maybe a lady drink for someone you like.

Same experience. Half the price. That is not being cheap. That is price value.

And the $100 a night drinking budget? It does not buy you a better night. It buys you a worse morning.

By the way. Knowing which places charge a cover, which ones are tourist traps, and which street has the normal prices, that is most of the game. It is exactly what I marked on the interactive maps in my Thailand Guide. Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket, over 500 pins.

4. Company

This is the category that got more expensive. Bar fines went up. Lady drinks went up. Some freelancers raised their price, and part of that is simply inflation.

Here is what I found over the years.

  • Around 1,500 Baht is good value.
  • Under 1,000 is rare these days.
  • Once you go over 3,000 Baht, I never noticed any extra value. A girl does not become twice as attractive because the price doubled.

Actually, the opposite can happen. At some point the service gets worse, not better. And when you hear a number like 4,000, or 5,000, you need to ask yourself a question. Is that her normal rate? Or is that the rate for a guy she does not like?

That is one of my oldest rules. If the price is far too high, it is not a price. It is a no.

So what is the real difference?

$1,000 versus $5,000. What do you actually get for the extra $4,000?

  • It is not the food. That is the same.
  • It is not the drinking. I just showed you how to get the same night for half.
  • The room is better, yes. But only up to a point.

The main difference between those two trips is one thing. How many fun sessions you have. And, to say it carefully, how many people take part in them. If you know what I mean.

That is it. That is what the money buys. Not a better Thailand. More of it.

The three ways guys waste money

Leak one: the cheap room in the wrong place. The first condo I rented was cheap, and I was proud of that. Then I noticed I was wasting half an hour every time I wanted something as simple as food from 7-Eleven or a ride to the train. A cheap room far away is not cheap. You pay in taxis and in time. I explain that in why a $9 hotel isn't cheap.

Leak two: not knowing the normal price. If you do not know what a drink, a taxi, or a bar fine usually costs, you are guaranteed to overpay. Not because everyone is a scammer. Because you have nothing to compare it to.

Leak three: paying to impress. The guy who tips too much, buys every round, and never asks what something costs is not seen as generous. He is seen as a target. And then the prices he hears get higher every day. More on that in why nice guys get played.

So here is where it lands

Is Thailand cheap in 2026? The basics, yes. Food, transport, a decent room. Still some of the best value in the world.

The nightlife, no. Not anymore. That is where the strong Baht and the higher prices hit you.

But here is what did not change. Enjoyment is reality minus expectations. If you come expecting the prices from a video filmed ten years ago, you will feel robbed. If you come knowing the real numbers, $1,000 is still a great trip. And $5,000 is a trip you will talk about for years.

The budget does not decide which one you get. The planning does.

If you want the real numbers and the exact places before you book anything, I have put all of it in one place: the Thailand Guide. 60+ videos, 4 eBooks, and the interactive maps for Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket, with over 500 pins. One payment, lifetime access.
